Tui 2000 Inc receives Substantial grants for plantings at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park

“Two substantial grants have been awarded to the environmental group Tui 2000 Inc. to undertake further planting work for the next four years at the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park (WNHP). The grants were from Waikato Regional Council, a total of $361535 over four years and Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust of $80,000, also over four years – a total of $441,535,” Lynne Garnham, Chairperson of Tui 2000, said today.

“Tui 2000 is a community group, established in 1989, with the goal of bringing native birds back to Hamilton City and central Waikato with the re-establishment of habitat. Taking one of the leading roles in the Waiwhakareke Advisory Group (WAG), Tui 2000 Inc has led the way for funding grants for WNHP. The grants cover the costs for a mix of pioneering, enrichment and infill plants in the Park" she added.

WNHP is being developed as a representative example of the original ecosystem diversity of the Hamilton Basin and will become one of Hamilton’s most important parks, especially significant as it is situated in an urban environment. Half of the park has now been planted and is already recognized both nationally and internationally, the most recent recognition from the Society for Ecological Restoration Australasia with a “highly commended”. The park is also in the catchment of Lake Rotokauri and the improvements in water quality enabled by these plantings will flow through to that lake and eventually the Waipa and the Waikato Rivers.

The WNHP is led by a community partnership and involves a wide range of community members from council staff, academics, iwi representatives, retired business people, students, school children, minority groups who are passionate about the project and its vision.

“Volunteers have been planting native trees and shrubs at WNHP since 2004, and these grants are recognition of these hundreds of people, young and old, from all walks of life who have devoted thousands of hours to this park”, Ms Garnham concluded

Friends of Waiwhakareke and the Potting Groups have received massive support in June with over 30 people at the planting day at Waiwhakareke and more than 20 at each of the potting sessions at the Mystery Creek Nursery.

Friends Planting Day at Waiwhakareke

Wow 34 volunteers arrived yesterday even with the awful weather predicted! No rain at all thought it was wet enough scrambling through the 'bush'. The volunteers were from all walks of life...a 76 year old 'birthday' boy, high school young men, grandchildren and all highly enthusiastic to take part - first timers and the hardworking regulars.

All the enrichment plants were planted. Paul has carried off another event arranged with military precision and a huge amount of preparation and planning. Just to get the plants from various nurseries and the exact number of the various plants has taken weeks of planning by him and Catherine Smith.

I felt that the enthusiasm by the Public for the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is growing exponentially With increased enthusiasm for the Park to be open for all to enjoy, will also increase the pressure on HCC to get the infrastructure in place that HCC itself requires of the Partners to be in place before that occurs

Great work by the Friends of Waiwhakareke Potting Group to have the plants ready for planting. See you all next month. Winter is our window of opportunity to plant the enrichment plants.

Working Bee: 27th May, Enrichment Plantings

Hi Everyone

This is an exciting time of year and we need as many volunteers as possible to help with the planting.

We will be planting 573 hillslope enrichment plants within Polygons 27 and 34 and will need at least 15 volunteers on the day. As both these Polygons are steep, please wear good strong foot wear. And please bring a spade, wet weather gear if the weather looks like rain, and morning tea.

UPDATE - TUI 2000 INC BLOG

it has been a long time coming bringing Tui 2000's Blog up to date. I spent many hours last week writing about the progress and activities of the group ,,, and then I lost the lot!!

So here we go again.

Tui 2000 Inc has gone from strength to strength. The original group established in 1989, sought to encourage Hamilton City residents to plant up their gardens with plants that provided food for New Zealand native fauna. Tui, in particular, populating the City boundaries has been achieved - not quite by the year 2000 but 2010 ! Research done has shown that predators, particularly the rats and possums, are detrimental to population growth. With the implementation of the Halo Project and active development of predator traps, bait stations and education of residents to take part in pest destruction: the Tui are here. Kereru 2020???

Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park

With this proactive background, the Members of Tui 2000 has extended their reach and support for various projects in the region. The partnership in Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park has been a major undertaking and commitment. Working in a strong partnership between Waikato University, Wintec, Tui 2000 and Hamilton City Council, Waiwhakareke is managed by the Council's Parks and Open Spaces Unit.
Established in 2004, the long-term aim of Waiwhakareke is to reconstruct the natural forest, wetland and lake ecosystems present in pre-European times.

Tui 2000 Inc has three key roles at Waiwhakareke. Firstly, Tui spend many hours preparing funding applications to pay for the plants for the annual Arbor Day. We are delighted to report that Waikato Regional Council is supporting Waiwhakareke with 80% of the funding Tui 2000 needs for the next 4 years. Applications have been submitted to other organisations for the remaining 20%.

Two subsidiary groups have been established: The Friends of Waiwhakareke and The Friends Potting Group. These groups propagate, locate and purchase enrichment plants placed into the Park as per predetermined criteria. Working bees involve weeding and releasing and in the winter, planting.

Paul Drage:
We are extremely happy to have Paul taking on the Treasurer's role added to his
many other roles. His sheer perseverance from building of relationships between the various parties; his deep and intellectually sound understanding of the challenges have meant that Waiwhakareke NHP is moving ahead. His professional approach to any undertaking eg planning, planting, securing plants, funding applications, monitoring progress, accounting and reporting to funders, is much appreciated by Tui 2000 Inc.

Warren at Waiwhakareke

A Profile:
A stalwart member of Tui 2000 Inc. Warren Stace explains his role submitting funding applications on behalf of the Waiwhakareke project to pay for the plants each year. Tui 2000 Inc. has made a commitment to attempt to raise $120,000 a year for plants - a massive undertaking for such a small group of committed environmentalists.
As a member of Tui 2000 and the ‘Waiwhakareke funding guy,’ Warren sits alongside Hamilton City Council staff and the representatives from Wintec, Friends of Waiwhakareke, University of Waikato and Hamilton Zoo that make up the project’s management group. The group meets monthly to keep plans on track for Waiwhakareke’s future.
Warren was recently awarded an Hamilton City Council Community Award for his work for the environment.

Stand at Waikato Show

Hi Everyone
Firstly my apologies for not adding to our blog site for such a long time. Working bees have been happening at Waiwkakareke, Barrretts Bush, Maungakawa and the Potting group at Tamahere. A very successful open afternoon was held at Waiwhakareke with 70 people attending. Many were from the neighbourhood. We have also had students from the School of Ed helping out as well.
. It has been a full on few days for Tui 2000 and its affiliated groups. We all pulled together in different ways - what with Waiwhakareke planting and using plants from the potting group, being at the Waikato show, helping with setting up the stand and dismantling, dressing up as a tui - thanks Allan, signing the papers for the Ministry for the Environment grant for Waiwhakareke, thanks to Warren and Andrew C for preparing the application and Moira for collecting our new seal. and Katherine H for organising us all for the stand and keeping us supported secretarial wise.
There was an immense amount of networking happening between the groups at the Show and we were all able to help each other and assist the people to get answers to their queries. I think the only one I couldn't help with was a chap trying to buy house plants.
Last night (Monday 30th) we also had an event at Te Awamutu as the Friends of Maungakawa were nominated for an Environment award with Trustpower and Waipa District Council. They missed this year but look out 2013! It is amazing when you go to an event such as that to see how many diverse groups there are in the community spending hours working for each other. I think it is time to return that question onto the Census. Dale and the group have made an enormous difference at the Gudex Reserve - a must visit place. Plantings and plans are still developing for more work up there and a new DOC walkway is to open soon. We are not all 'talk-fests' as Nick Smith said of volunteer groups in 1999-2000.
Hope some of you can make it to Arbour Day on 1st June plantings at Waiwhakareke. You are asked to register with the Hamilton City Council Parks and Gardens if you are going. Free buses will be leaving from various points around town.

Barrett Bush Working Bee Sunday 6th November 2011

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that next Sunday the 6 November 2011 will be the next Barrett Bush Working Party. We will meet at 9.00 am at the end of Barrett Road and discuss our programme for the day.

Our tasks will be mainly routine maintenance clearing weeds and releasing plants where needed.Privet is a constant battle but the seasonal choking weeds, convolvulus and cleavers always need attention. Please bring spades, gloves and your morning tea.

Animal pests,possums and rats also need reduction. The new automatic possum trap will be checked as will John's new rat traps. Results will be looked to with interest.

If anybody has a spare piece of 150x50 mm, 1 metre in length we could repair the broken seat in the Central Area morning tea spot - before morning tea?

If you would like to assist with the restoration and maintenance of a remnant of Kahikatea forest - then you are welcome to join a group of regular helpers at Barrett Bush, Barrett Road, south of Dinsdale. The group meet on site on the first Sunday of the month - except for January, at 9.00am and work till 12 noon. This group is affiliated to Tui 2000 Inc.
